While technically we call it a camp, it is not an overnight or travel type of event. Band camp is rehearsals in the Summer to prepare us for our performances early in the school year. It is incredibly important that all students attend these summer dates, because most of our halftime show will be set based on the students who attend band camp. Be advised: You may be cut from marching band due to lack of attendance and preparation. Please be there for practice or communicate any absences. You can find more detailed information and a daily schedule in the link below.
Students must be academically eligible to participate in Marching Band. 10th, 11th, and 12th eligibility require a student has passed their Spring 2022 classes to participate in the Fall 2022 activities. 9th graders are all academically eligible for their first semester of high school. NEW THIS YEAR: ALL STUDENTS must have a physical on file with the school. These last for two years and can be used for any sport or activity that requires a physical. Students only need one physical form that can be used for multiple activities. Email Ms. Epperson if you need to check that you have a physical on file from another activity. If you are looking for a place to do your physical – Liberty Hospital Clinics, CVS/Walgreens are recommended. The physical form is attached in this letter.
All our rehearsals will be held at NKCHS in the Band Room, Gym, and the Football Stadium. Students should be prepared to be both indoors and outdoors during camp.
Rehearsals will be held from 9am until 3pm. Leadership can also expect to come early or possibly stay late for informational meetings. Work and lack of rides are non-excusable. There are some social events that happen after camp for any student interested, but they are optional. Please contact Ms. Epperson if you are in need of a ride to or from camp. Many students and families offer help to get each other to camp. Colorguard has a modified schedule with Coach Mills that has been communicated during Summer practices. If you need a ride or willing to provide rides, sign up for our ride share program here.
There are no camp costs, but we do have band fees for students. Not everything can be provided by the school district, and in order to stay competitive with other schools we ask that students pay fees for items that will be used or kept by that specific student. No student will be turned away for the inability to pay, and arrangements can be made including scholarship assistance for families. Please keep in contact with us so that we can help you.
You are welcome to attend a rehearsal and see what your child does during the day. We would love to get to know you. We ask for any visitor who wishes to come to attend the morning session outside and sit in the bleachers during rehearsal. Please join us for our exhibition night on August 12th at 7pm at NKCHS Stadium where you can see what we have learned at camp and a preview of our show for this year.
· Wear light comfortable clothes and tennis shoes for marching. Keep it school appropriate.
· Bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen – this is incredibly important!
· Hats and Sunglasses are welcome and encouraged for outdoor rehearsals.
· Bring money for lunch, we will take a 45-minute break every afternoon for lunch.
· Bring your performance equipment (instrument, flag, music etc) everyday
· Marching Woodwinds and Brass will want to have a Lyre (pronounced liar) & Flip Folder (holders for music) every day. Music Stands will not be available outside, so this is important.
· Percussionists will want to have a binder for music and charts everyday
· Colorguard will want to have a folder for choreography notes and charts everyday
Do not let the first day of camp be the first time you go outside. Get acclimated to the heat before coming to camp.
